Bewildered Beasts

In 1972 I happened upon a greek gentleman on the island of Corfu who left a lasting impression upon me. He was sitting under a grove of fig trees on a white plastic chair. He was shirtless and shoeless. He was talking to two goats, sometimes in an affectionate tone and sometimes with a scolding voice. He did this for a very long time. I asked him why he was talking to the goats. He said: “goats are just as friendly as people and just as viscious as people, but they are not dangerous like people”. Fifty years later, I’m still trying to figure out what he meant.

So, the thought stayed with me for years and enticed me to explore these often unappreciated beasts. In subsequent years, I found a similar connection to horses and their relationship with people.
